The platform recommends a minimum of 128x128 pixels but uploading at 512x512 or even 1024x1024 gives Discord more to work with when it compresses and scales the image for different display contexts. How to Resize an Image for Discord PFP
Enter 512 in both the width and height fields for a solid all-round result. For the sharpest possible output go with 1024 in both fields. Turn the Maintain Aspect Ratio checkbox off to force a perfect square regardless of the original image shape.
Before resizing, make sure the main subject of the image is centered. Discord applies a circular crop that hides the corners of the square, so anything important near the edges will not be visible in the final profile picture. A portrait photo or logo centered with some breathing room around it fits the circular frame cleanly.

Why Image Size Matters on Discord

Output Format for Discord Profile Pictures
PNG is the standard choice for Discord profile pictures. It supports transparency which matters if the image has a custom or transparent background, and it keeps edges clean after Discord applies the circular crop. JPEG works fine for standard portrait photos without transparency but the lack of transparency support means the corners will have a solid background color rather than blending cleanly into the circular mask. Discord also supports animated GIF profile pictures for Nitro subscribers, which is outside the scope of a standard image resize.
