Twitter, now rebranded as X, has specific image requirements for different parts of a profile and getting even one of them wrong makes an account look unpolished. The profile photo displays as a circle and the recommended upload size is 400x400 pixels. The header image that spans the top of a profile page is recommended at 1500x500 pixels. Images shared in tweets display at a variety of sizes depending on how many images are in the post, but preparing them at 1200x675 covers the standard landscape tweet image format. Each of these is a separate asset with its own requirements and preparing them all at the correct sizes before uploading is worth doing.
How to Resize Images for Twitter
For the profile photo, enter 400 in both the width and height fields and turn the Maintain Aspect Ratio checkbox off for a forced square. For the header image, enter 1500 in the width field and 500 in the height field. For standard tweet images, enter 1200 in the width field and 675 in the height field.
Twitter applies a circular crop to profile photos, so centering the subject before uploading is important. Anything near the corners of the square will be hidden by the circular mask. For header images, keeping the most important content away from the edges and the bottom portion of the image avoids it being covered by the profile photo overlay.

PNG works well for profile photos, particularly when the image has a custom or graphic background. Twitter has a 5MB file size limit for images in tweets and a 2MB limit for profile photos, so keeping file sizes reasonable is worth bearing in mind when choosing between formats.
